His enemies found out and attempted to kill him. He tracked the plot to the founder of the Weapon X program who was trying to recreate the experiment that gave Wolverine his unbreakable skeleton. Wolverine thwarted his plans but ended up getting covered in adamantium, which ultimately killed him.
