About the Artist
Joe Corroney is a well-known figure in the comic-book industry and currently lends his talents to IDW Publishing’s Star Trek ongoing series while also continuing to create new Star Wars artwork for Disney and Lucasfilm. Other licensed properties he’s illustrated for are Indiana Jones, The Avengers, The Walking Dead, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Heroes and many more.
Corroney kicked off his career drawing comic books professionally in 1992, while still a sophomore at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio. In 1996, he began illustrating official Star Wars artwork for Lucasfilm and their licensees. Corroney taught the Comic Book Illustration and Digital Illustration courses at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, from 1998 to 2008, as well as The Ohio State University's Summer Comic Book Workshop.
He currently lives in Sandusky, Ohio.
What excited you most about the opportunity to get involved in this Star Trek 50th anniversary art project?
I’ve been illustrating official Star Trek artwork for almost my entire professional career so being asked to contribute new, special artwork for the 50th anniversary of the franchise is a huge honor and a big thrill for me. I think the most-appealing aspect about this project was getting to come up with a variety of ideas from my own imagination and being given a lot of freedom and support from CBS to explore these concepts on my own as a creator.
How is your Star Trek artwork similar to or different from your other works?
I’d say most of my Star Trek artwork is very similar to most of my work I do for clients and publishers. I started out illustrating in comic books professionally at a young age and, shortly after, I broke into publishing, illustrating Star Wars professionally for Lucasfilm. Over the years almost everything I learned in illustrating for Star Wars I’ve been able to apply and translate over to Star Trek and vice versa. Both properties share some obvious similarities, but there are also huge differences. Nevertheless, style-wise and technique-wise I’ve been able to create and develop a consistency in my art between the two franchises.

I’m really glad they’re so different thematically. I think the Star Trek universe lends itself to a massive variety of subject matter, themes and approaches. Plus, I’ve been doing official Trek art for so long it’s always fun to challenge myself and think outside the box.
