Deep Space Nine is one of the most significant space stations in the Alpha Quadrant, not only from a political and strategic point of view but also from a historical perspective. Originally built by the Cardassians in the orbit of Bajor during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, the station was called Terok Nor. After the Cardassians withdrew and Starfleet took over, the station was moved to the Denorios belt, closer to the opening of the Bajoran Wormhole and renamed DS9. Because of the wormhole and the Dominion War, the station became an invaluable strategic location for the Federation and her allies.
