With Guest Authors & Panelists

Glenda C. Finkelstein

Author - Glenda C. Finkelstein has a wide and varied career as a writer having published song lyrics, human-interest articles, poems, short stories, novels, and screenplays. Her interest in writing was not just a happenstance having a great-grandfather who was a wonderful poet, and aunts and uncles who nurtured her imagination. Inspired by the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien, this art form was a natural course for her to take. She has written one historical novel, but her heart lies mostly with the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre’s where her imagination can soar unhindered. Her writing has won her several awards, and is branching off into new uncharted territories. Her latest novel, “Nemesis Returns,” was published by Aisling Press and marks her sixth book. In addition to her writing, she has ventured into the arena of acting. She voices six of her female characters in the audio adaptation of her novel, “Nemesis Rising,”. The audio version of “The Edge of The Universe” is currently available for podcast on her website at www.glendas-books.com. She also took on the starring role of, Angel Gibbs, in the 33-minute short subject film, “Perfect Copy,” for which she wrote the screenplay. It was nominated for Best Dramatic Short at the Melbourne Independent Filmakers Festival in November 2007.

William Hatfield

Author - William Hatfield was born in a small town in northern Michigan, attended Western Michigan University, getting a degree in history and communications. Musical engagements led him to Gainesville, Florida, where he continues to live with his wife Karen, and their two feline daughters, Ebbie and Angie. Rumor has it, he may have grown up, but it seems unlikely. He still plays gigs, but more for therapy than making a living. His first science fiction novel, Captive Audience, was published in 2004. The sequel, Duel Roles, in 2010. Key Notes, a collection of shorts stories from across genres, came out in early 2012. Although science fiction is his favorite, he has expanded his horizons with Menu for Murder, a very quirky mystery based in Key West. Both genres provide the opportunity to create interesting and challenging characters that never cease to amuse and surprise him with their inherent independence.

K.L. Nappier

Author - K.L. Nappier. Fast-paced action and smart, stylish writing are the hallmarks of K.L. Nappier's speculative thrillers, mysteries and dark fiction. Some call her style eclectic; some call it cross-over. Moving between genres may keep her books out of the mainstream, but once you've discovered her, you'll realize what thousands of readers already know, and why critics think she's one of the best authors writing independent fiction.

Chris Berman

Author and lecturer Chris Berman might be considered “the accidental author”. While recovering from a bicycle versus SUV accident, he wrote his first novel, The Hive. The Hive invaded American and United Kingdom bookstores in February of 2009. After completing this book, he wrote RED MOON followed by STAR PIRATES which has just been released and a new work, DAS BELL, is awaiting publication. Berman grew up as a young boy on a diet of science fiction from authors such as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and John Campbell. Later, he added others, such as Alan Dean Foster, Ben Bova, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Eric Flint, Harry Turtledove and James P. Hogan to his list of favorites. Science fiction was not his only passion, so was science fact. As a boy, he lived a few blocks down from a serious amateur astronomer. This man taught him about the stars and planets as well as how to photograph astronomical events and grind his own mirrors and lenses to make telescopes. He is also a spaceflight enthusiast with a good deal of expertise in both the US and Russian space programs.

Tye Bourdony

Artist -Tye Bourdony is a name some of you out there may be familiar with. A life-long sci-fi fan, Tye is also a free-lance cartoonist and a convention circuit regular, best known for his 'The Lighter Side of Sci-Fi' comic strip, which pokes fun at everything from 'Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century' to 'Star Trek', from 'Star Wars' to 'Battlestar Gallactica', often mixing and matching series and stars to create bizarre and often hilarious cartoons - even 'The Jetsons' has been known to make a shoe-in. Creating sci-fi satires for over ten years now, Tyes' work has been published in several magazines such as Starlog, Parsec Magazine, The Star Trek Communicator, Cracked and most recently Sci-Fi Magazine just to name a few. We are thrilled to announce the release to Tye's first book "The Lighter Side of Sci-fi - The Complete Collection. We are happy to hear that he will be joining us again this year.

 Master of Ceremonies

Marc B. Lee - Our MC!

MC Marc B. Lee is an international Show Host and Auctioneer for a number of events around the world. He was absolutely wonderful as host of our first event in May 2010 and every show since.  We are thrilled to have him on board. He has been a science fiction fan for over 30 years and his specialized brand of humor and energy has ignited the excitement of every convention-hosting job from here to Europe. Marc’s association with many actors & behind the scenes artists has kept his wit and knowledge on edge and he takes his responsibilities as a party-rouser and pitch man very seriously, realizing how much the average person pays to be entertained. He has worked with well over 300 sci-fi celebrities. After being hired by movie director Dean Devlin and TNT to organize and host a convention in Portland, Oregon based on the television show LEVERAGE, Marc is ready for his next assignment. We are thrilled that Marc was available to join us once again!

Event Overview

Hilton Orlando Resort Lake Buena Vista

We are so excited to announce that Away Mission: Orlando will return to the Hilton Orlando Resort in the heart of the Walt Disney Resort within walking distance of Downtown Disney!
For those of you who might have missed our last event, below are the details on this spectacular venue!

Hilton Orlando Resort Lake Buena Vista
1751 Hotel Plaza Boulevard, Lake Buena Vista, Florida 32830
Tel: 1-800-782-4414

OK, now we know what you are thinking. Wow, that is a pretty luxurious 4-star hotel. Can we afford it? Well hold on to those pointy little ears folks. We have secured an incredible deal for our guests. Room nights are only $99 per night with NO RESORT FEES! This is an absolutely unheard of price for this caliber of hotel. You will not find a lower price for this hotel anywhere else, including the "discount" hotel web sites where you would have to make a non refundable prepayment of your entire hotel stay. Plus, normally the Hilton would charge an additional $13 per day for parking but we have also had this price reduced to just $6 per day, just for our patrons! Don't forget to pick up your parking voucher at our registration desk.

Wow, what an incredible opportunity to stay at a Disney Resort hotel and enjoy all of the perks for such a low price. Ah, yes, we said perks! The Hilton offers several perks and details are available on their web site but here are a couple that really stand out. If you stay at the Hilton, you will have access to discounted tickets to all the Disney attractions. You will also be eligible for Extra Magic Hours – Each day one of the Disney Theme Parks opens an hour early or stays open up to an extra three hours, so guests of the Hilton have the opportunity to get extra time in the parks. This terrific feature allows guests to enjoy the Theme Parks at a relaxed pace and to take advantage of their complimentary transportation to any of the Disney theme parks and Downtown Disney. It is one of the most exciting and innovative ways to see the Disney Theme Parks:

- With so much to see and do, make the most of your vacation with shorter lines.

- Enjoy after hours easy access to some of the most popular attractions.

- Make your day more relaxing by doing everything at an easy, relaxed pace.

OK, so we know what you are thinking again (remember we can do that Vulcan mind meld thingy). Away Mission: Orlando provides such a full schedule that I won't have time to enjoy the theme parks. Well, the Hilton has agreed to extend our incredible $99 rate up to 3 days before and 3 days after our event. Bring your family and friends a few days early or stay a few extra nights and enjoy all the benefits the Hilton has to offer at your own pace. This year our event takes place over Columbus Day weekend so you'll have a little extra time off to get away!

Another great benefit of staying at our host hotel: as many of you know, our events go on late into the evening Friday and Saturday nights. Not to mention that our celebrity guests have been known to hang out and have fun with their fans at the hotel bar or restaurant. Just ask the guys who enjoyed Long Island Iced Tea's with Christopher Lloyd late into the evening or those who watched the hockey game with Michael Shanks at the sports bar or even a few who worked out with Casper Van Dien at the hotel's gym. Think of all the experiences that you'd miss out. Why would you stay anywhere else!

We must warn you that the hotel will be at full occupancy that weekend. They were holding a block of rooms for our group but we anticipate that they will go fast. To make your reservations dial 1-800-782-4414. Don't forget to mention our group code "AWY" or Away Mission: Orlando. You may also reserve online by visiting our customized RESERVATION PAGE. NOT ALL ROOM TYPES ARE LISTED ONLINE - CALL THE RESERVATION NUMBER FOR MORE OPTIONS - Don't hesitate and reserve today!

All-Star Banquet - $89 -- ORDER NOW!

After a break of over fifteen years, Eric Menyuk (The Traveler) and Robin Curtis (Lt. Saavik) team up once again to play their favorite "super fan" characters at Away Mission: Orlando! See Eric and Robin dust off their old cruise ship routines, let loose with some updated zingers and bring the War of the Sexes back to the stage.

Stick around for the Away Mission Costume Contest immediately following "The Spoof".
Eric and Robin will be sticking around as part of our celebrity panel of judges!

Everyone loves to dress up in costumes or watch those who do! We at Away Mission are no exception and we want you to make the most of your convention experience, that is why we have our fun and exciting Saturday Night Costume Contest! Some of you were a bit disappointed with the results of last year's contest. It seems our judges voted with their hearts rather than rewarding those who worked so hard and spent a lot of time and money coming up with their costume. This year we have revamped our costume contest rules and scoring system so we hope you will all participate!

Costumes entered into the contest will be judged by an impartial panel of three (3) judges. Criteria for the costumes will be scored on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest possible score in the following categories:

  • Originality – How unique is the costume?
  • Creativity – Did you make it yourself or was it made for you?
  • Presentation – Did you perform a skit or sing a song? Did you comport yourself as the character?
  • Style – Is it highly screen accurate or a re-imagining in a completely new way?
  • Overall average score of the 4 above

This should be great fun and both events are FREE with your Away Mission ticket!
